Study was conducted to determine the effects of chemical fertilizer (4-16-24+4MgO+0.5 Borax) rates and topping heights on quality and yield of flue-cured tobacco (K 326). Field experiments were conducted from October 1990 to March 1993 at Mae Jo Tobacco Experiment Station, Chiang Mai. Three rates of chemical fertilizer 100, 120 and 150 kg/Rai and three levels of topping 18, 21 and 24 leaves per plant, were evaluated in 1991. Four rates of chemical fertilizer 80, 100, 120 and 150 kg/Rai and four levels of topping 18, 21, 24 leaves per plant and untopped, were evaluated in 1992-1993. The treatment were arranged in a factorial experiment in RCBD with three replications. Results from 3 year trials showed that fresh and cured leaf weights, crop value, cured leaf grades and chemical composition of cured leaves were affected by the rates of chemical fertilizer and vary from year to year. In 1991 no significant differences on yield of both fresh and cured leaves, crop value, cured leaf grades and chemical composition of cured leaves. In 1992 fresh and cured leaf weights, crop value, the percentage of high and medium grades of cured leaves and the nicotine content were significantly affected by the rates of chemical fertilizer. In 1993 only cured leaf weights and nicotine content were significantly affected by the rates of chemical fertilizer. Effects of topping heights showed the same tendency with in three year trials. In 1991 fresh and cured leaf weights, crop value, cured leaf grades and chemical composition were not affected by three levels of topping heights. In 1992 and 1993 the untopped gave the lowest of fresh and cured leaf weights, crop value, the percentage of medium grade on cured leaves, and levels of both nicotine and reducing sugars which were significantly different from the other levels of topping.
