The accurate prediction of crop water requirements is one of the most important tasks of planning and designing large irrigation projects. The paper analyses the methods how to determine crop evapotranspiration by empirical formulae, which were developed on the basis of long-term observation of the climatic and meteorological characteristics of the region. The complete procedure of determining the net irrigation water requirement is presented for the case of the Morava and Resava valleys (Serbia, Yugoslavia). In particular, the so-called "oasis effect" is described, i.e. micro-climate changes as a consequence of large scale irrigation, implying a certain decrease of water requirements as compared to the period before the irrigation was implemented.
