In this paper the influence of superficial and subterranean waters on hydromorphism of the swampy gley soils of the field of Zabari, Serbia (Yugoslavia), in the area of about 8,500 ha was investigated. The field of Zabari is situated on the right side of the Morava river, and it belongs to the community of Zabari. High level of subterrannean water, flood water, lateral water, as well as rainfall and hydrophilic vegetation have negative effect on pedogenetic processes in soil. Depending on these factors, different subtypes of the swampy gley soils were formed, such as: amphigley, epigley and hypogley. Amfigley soils were formed under the influence of subterranean and superficial water, epigley under superficial and hipogley under subterranean water. These soils were ameliorated and they are an important granary in Serbia (Yugoslavia).
