Due to great importance of genetic resources for Yugoslavia, the Federal Government has constituted the Federal Institute for Plant and Animal Genetic Resources, with the intention for the Institute to take assignments, regarding their protection in the field of agricultural species of plants and animals, on itself. Responsibilities in field of genetic resources as well as work on preservation of agricultural plant and animal species variability, is institutionalized in four departments: Department of Plant and Animal Genes - National Gene Banks, Department for Recognition and Protection of Agricultural and Forest Plant Cultivars and Animal Races, Department for Seeds and Department for Common and Legal Proceedings. Central unit of the Federal Information System, with its assignment to connect all contributors at these jobs, and which is composed of several smaller systems, will also be settled in this Institute, where all the information will be gathered and those reguired send to those that are interested, depending on degree of their accessibility. Federal Institute is in touch with leading international institutions in this field, as they are IPGRI, ISTA, UPOV.
