Influence of locality and planting date and harvesting period on the yield and quality of mint leaves (Mentha piperita L., Micham) and its essential oil

Within the field experiments, laid out on three locations (Pozega, Goroblje and Pancevo, Serbia, Yugoslavia), during the two-year period (1991-1993), the influence of planting and harvesting period on fluctuation of the yield of dry mint leaves and quantity and quality of its essential oil was monitored. On the whole, the examined parameters influence on dry leaves yield as well as the content of some leaf essential oil components. The parameter - harvesting period, expressed significant influence on the content of essential oil as well as on its chemical composition. Therefore, in the first windrow, there was significant increase in menthofurane, menthyl-acetate, limonene and 1.8-cineole content, while the content of menthone, in general, was higher in the second windrow. The exception was the Pancevo locality, as a consequence of a more favourable rainfall regime in the second part of the vegetative period of mint. Finally, it should be pointed out that with the July mint mowing - in both years and at all three locatities, higher drug yield and higher essential oil content (by 23.34%) were produced.
