Disinfection of drinking water and generation of by-products

In this paper the process of disinfection, especially disinfection with chlorine, and the generation of by-products were analysed. The analysis consists of some relevant aspects: standard drinking water quality, some influence of the organic content, oxidants and disinfection and finally the situation both in Yugoslavia and some well developed countries. Analysis of disinfection and generation of PHOM, the influence of THM and other water quality parameters are used to compare the practice that we have with the practice in the well developed countries. Some figures about the consumption of chlorine in network and the control of bacteriological state of water and TEM in these systems are presented, as well. On the basis of these analyses the present situation is estimated and the paper gives some suggestions how to improve the quality of drinking water in Yugoslavia.
