By zooplankton composition analysis (1990-1996), in five canals in Backa and Banat (Yugoslavia) 135 species were determined, of which: 26 (19.25%) Protozoa, 79 (58.50%) Rotatoria, 19 (14.10%) Cladocera and 11 (8.15%) Copepoda. The number of species varied with the season and locality. The number of individual in the Backa canals ranged from 280 to 890 ind/squaremeter, while in the Banat canals it was between 183.9 and 559.4 ind/square meter. The number of fish species varied from 15 to 30, depending upon the locality. On the basis of the results of investigated animal groups, it was found that the diversity is highest in most of the Backa canals, owing to the water quality.
