Among the harmful effects of water, floods are still the most significant by the intensity of damages they cause. Some extreme floods which occurred in the last years in the world prove that floods are among the greatest natural disasters. Subsequently, the present status of flood control in Serbia (Yugoslavia) is decribed, and the reasons why it is unsatisfactory. Then, the structural and non-structural measures for the mitigation of flood damages are described in accordance with the Water Management Master Plan of Serbia, with recommendations how to implement these in the actual economic situation.
