Morphological and cultivating qualities of fifty-two isolates of Rhynchosporium secalis, originating from different regions in Serbia (Yugoslavia) were studied. The virulence of the population, the spreading out of its economic importance, as well as the possibility of its keeping and continuing were researched. The mycelium of the parasite is hyaline with many cells. The conidia are very often with two cells, of dimensions 13-26 x 4-8 micrometer. The isolates RS-23 and RS-29 form even conidia with three cells of dimensions 21-26 x 8 micrometer, and they have not been described in the literature. The pure culture of Rhynchosporium secalis are of different colours: pinkish, yellow, light dark, very dark and black. The optimal temperatures for the growth of mycelia are between 15 deg C and 20 deg C. The population of Rhynchosporium secalis was composed of 39 pathotypes on the territory of Serbia (Yugoslavia). The barley cultivars Novosadski 307, Novosadski 331 and Partizan, all these barley cultivars cultivated for production, have got a high degree of resistance to the pathogen.The loss in the production caused by this fungus was 6-29 in 1996. This pathogen is transmitted by the infected barley seed (1.0-2.26), and barley debris.
