The effects of chronic, 15-day, administration of the beta-adrenergic antagonist propranolol (4 mg/kg/d; subcutaneously) on the ventral prostate structure and serum testosterone concentrations were examined in rats with different androgen status, that is immature, adult testosterone-injected (1 mg/rat) and chemically castrated animals. These results show that chronic treatment with propranolol may affect both contractile and secretory elements of the rat ventral prostate depending on the androgen status of the animals and, accordingly, on the site of propranolol-action.
