Trials of Autumn sugar beet crops were performed in Italy above the 42nd parallel north. Results were positive up to the limit of the 44th parallel and showed a yield increase as to the spring sowing, in the same harvest period, but also showed technical limits as to bolting. The relationship between bolting and sowing period is highlighted. The sowing delay allows a significant reduction of bolting, but exposes the crop to the risk of frost. From the agronomic point of view, crop protection against pests and weeds is not a problem as for crop husbandry, but some diseases (such as Oidium and Cercospora) showed more severe and earlier attacks. From the industrial point of view, the increase in root fibrousness entails modest troubles which can be overcome bv means of suitable measures during processing. Between the 42nd and the 44th parallel, the bolting rate is more reduced and presently the crop is in the phase of the pre-industrial diffusion.
