The experiments were made in a loop bioreactor, where activated sludge was immobilized on a silicon carbide carrier. The influence of the COD load rate on the efficiency of the carbon and nitrogen removal from the municipal waste by immobilized biomass was examined. The experiments were performed at hydraulic retention time equal to 128, 64, 32, 18 min and constant internal circulation rate 50 cubic dm per hour. The use of the loop reactor with biomass immobilized on the ceramic carrier permitted to obtain 78/ reduction of carbon substrate in municipal waste. The efficiency of the nitrification was 91/ and the denitrification 71.2/. It was found that such efficiency of a carbon and nitrogen removal can be obtained at the following technological parameters: organic load rate 5.8 g per cubic dm, hydraulic retention time in the immobilized system 32 min and the internal circulation rate 50 cubic dm per h. Under aerobic conditions, in the immobilized system, the biomass yield was low - 0.17 g per g.
