Elimination of fleas and its effects on some zoo animals by the sole application of a lufenuron-containing product

Lufenuron (Program), given in feed at the recommended dog dosage (10 mg/kg body weight), eliminated severe flea infestations and dermatitis in a white wolf (Canis lupus tundrarum), beech martens (Martens foina), raccoons (Procyon lotor), and southern coatis (Nasua nasua) in a zoo in Hungary; the dermatitis disappeared in 3-6 weeks. The same treatment was effective in hyaenas (Hyaena striata), red and arctic foxes(Vulpes vulpes, Alopex lagopus) and raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) that showed constant nervousness and frequent scratching.The cat dose (30 mg/kg) was given to a lion (Panthera leo),a tiger (P. tigris), a leopard (P. pardus) and a jaguar (P. onca) that were in neighbouring cages and had vague symptoms.
