Recent reports have shown that there is an increase in the amount of non-starch polysaccharides (NPS) contained in grain. These polysaccharides have a highly viscous nature and act in increasing viscosity within the intestines of broiler chickens, which in turn reduces starch digestibility, leading to low nutritive values (AME). Research has found that an increase in gut viscosity leads to poor growth and productivity in broilers due to reduced feed intake and efficiency of utilization. This study set out to show the variability in viscosity in Hungarian wheat, the probable relationship between chemical composition and viscosity and possible relationship between viscosity and feed intake.
