Effects of water depletion on growth and yield of soybean

The objective of this research was to investigate the period in which water depletion will influence soybean growth and production. This research was conducted from October to December 1997 in a plastic house in Agricultural Faculty of Lampung University. Three growing periods in this research were R1, from germination to flowering; R2, from germination to pod development and R3 from germination to pod filling and five water depletion level: D1, water depletion 0-10 percent; D2, 0-(20-30) percent; D3, 0-(40-50) percent, D4, 0-(60-70) percent, D5, 0-(80-90) percent. The result showed that water depletion effect on leaves number was not significant except in the fourth week, not significant on plant height and pod number, not significant on flowers number except for the sixth week, not significant on crop production, also not significant on crop water requirement. Eventhough the results showed that water depletion showed no significant effect on all variables there were some tendencies that from flowers number it is known that D2 is the treatment which was the optimum level and the flowers number which was low on D5 treatment, but it is still could reach the highest number if after water depletion treatment was ended the crops was watered again at field capacity level (0-10) percent. It can be concluded that water depletion until (80-90) percent during vegetative period and even on flowering period is allowed as long as the crops would be irrigated immediately. The soybean production varied from 12.1 to 15.9 g/pot and the crop water requirement varied from 489.7 to 616.7 mm/pot
