The purpose of the study is to work out a typology of urban settlements as a base for planning and foreseeing the development of social life in urban areas. In this study an urban area is understood as a form of organisation of society, which is expressed in social changes. The main field of this study is to find out the spatial differences of social life conditions in urban areas of Latvia, and to find out how should they be evaluated to follow the ongoing and forthcoming social changes. The classification of the urban areas has been done on the basis of empirical analysis of the statistical material indirectly characterizing differences of socio-geographic structure of the urban areas and searching for principles of relevances for classification by qualitative criteria.
