Selenium deficiency in food products in Latvia is caused by low content of selenium in some soil areas. To increase the uptake of selenium by forage and crop plants mineral fertilizers are enriched with selenium compounds. The task of the present investigation was to examine the influence of selenium on the plant growth. For that purpose two varieties of lettuce were grown on loamy soil. The methods of the experiment are described, the resulting data are analysed. Considering the investigation results the following conclusion can be drawn: planning soil enrichment with selenium, extensive experiments with various crops at different selenium concentrations in soil are necessary.
