Mapping potential areas of ground subsidence in Estonian underground oil shale mining district

The production rate and the potential of the oil shale as the main source for power industry in Estonia is described. The influence of underground and surface mining on ground subsistence as well as on groundwater and surface water regimes is discussed. The importance of mapping potential areas of ground subsidence in underground oil shale mining district is explained. The work of mapping started in the Mining Institute of Tallinn Technical University is described. Available mine maps and drawings are used as a database for digitizing and scanning. For the further analysis Mapinfo features and a vertical mapper are used.
