[Characterization of pine knots, and the value of pine stemwood]

The characteristic features of pine knots are discussed, and the value of pine stemwood is determined. The field data were obtained by evaluating the features of knots and the stemwood value of 28 sample trees felled in different places of Latvia. The following indices were obtained: the mean knot diameter, the total number of knots and their distribution, the summary knot diameter, the character of knot whorls, the ratio between the total knot diameter and the stem parameter. The value of pine stemwood was determined considering the diameter and the grade of sawlogs expected. The distribution of stems by volume and value was also investigated. The research is expected to be continued.
