An overview of the recent research and development in wood processing at the Latvia Forestry Research Institute "Silava"

The research and development in wood processing over the last decade at LFRI "Silava" covers the following: novel centrifugal fan (performance factor - more than 0,8); high-pressure axial fan; drying regimes for softwoods, birch and ash in flue gases; diverse design furnaces and drying chambers, 3-line, 18-stack drying chamber with transversially-axial circulation of the drying agent of the production capacity 20,000 m**3 of sawn wood per year. Developed is a drying regime for softwoods in a regular heat flow, where, by using R.Keilwert's balance humidity curve, it is possible to determine the average current sawn-wood humidity at any stage of drying.
