[Influence of night presowing tillage on field weediness]

In 1997-98 field trials were carried out to investigate the influence of tillage in the dark (at night) on the weediness of barley field. Germination of weeds requires light. During soil tillage at daytime weed seeds are exposed to light and start to germinate. The field trials on presowing tillage at night showed that the number of weeds, their dry mass and their height diminished compared with the tillage in the daytime. The greatest effect was observed in the case of Matricaria inodora (in 1997) and Spergula vulgaris (in 1998).
