Elpere, I. (University of Latvia, Riga (Latvia))
The development of food production industry in Latvia in recent years is reviewed, and the prospects of its development in future are discussed. The particular importance of the two largest food production industry branches - the processing of dairy and fishery products - for the domestic market as well as for export is pointed out. The food production technology on local enterprises is compared with that used in the developed European countries. It is stated that the profitability of Latvia's food production eneterprises and the quality of products are lower as compared to those in other European countries. The main causes are - old food production machinery and technology. The conclusion is drawn that for a successful development of the food production industry in Latvia it must be supported by the state in particular concerning the small and medium-size enterprises.
