[Optimization of economic and social development of Latgale]

The history of economic social and cultural development of the Eastern Latvia - Latgale - is reviewed. The natural and historic conditions that caused the economic backwardness of the region are explained. The present socio-economic state of the region as well as its main problems are described. The law "On specially supported regions" passed in the Latvian Parliament on 10.06.97 is discussed. The advantages envisaged in the law for the development of Latgale are pointed out.
