Low-cost peanut seed storage

In view of the problem on seed availability for dry season planting and the lack of seed storage technologies appropriate at farmers level, a simpler and more appropriate seed storage for peanut was developed. The use of fabricated containers was introduced in Igguig, Amulung and Alcala, and Lallo, Cagayan and in Isabela from 1996 to 1998. The fabricated container is made of GI sheet gauge 26. It could store 120 kg of well-sorted peanut seeds dried at 4-5 percent MC. The container is tightly covered and stored at ambient temperature undisturbed for 6-8 months. During the 3-year period of project implementation, initial moisture content and seed viability were within the recommended levels of 4-5 percent and 90 percent and above, respectively. Field germination is within acceptable limits (83-88 percent). For all locations, the seeds stored for eight months resulted in an average yield of 1.28 t/ha in 1996 and 0.75 t/ha in 1997 which were higher than the national average of 0.72 t/ha. Also, test results indicated the farmers' acceptability of the technology, with 91 percent adoption rate. From the initial 56 adoptors in 1996, adoptors grew to 130 in 1998
