Temporal distribution of gastrointestinal (GIT) nematodes of goats and sheep at the CLSU [Philippines] small ruminants R and D [research and development] center

Forty young goats and 35 sheep were examined to provide a logical program for deworming sheep and goats based on their monthly fecal egg counts (FEC). Specifically, the study determined the monthly parasitic loads of goats and sheep, identified the common GIT nematodes affecting them, and correlated the monthly fecal egg count with the monthly rainfall, humidity, and temperature. The monthly FEC of sheep and goats were different from each other. The FEC of goats aged 1-6 months had a light to moderate infection while that of the 7-12 month old ones had moderate infection. In sheep aged 1-6 months, the degree of infection can be described as moderate to light while the 7-12 month old had light infection. In goats, the total rainfall and percent humidity primarily influenced FEC while in sheep, the FEC is inversely correlated with temperature. The common nematodes affecting goats and sheep were the Haemonchus and Trichostrongylus. It is recommended that deworming in goats be done before the peak of worm ova production in June and July. On the other hand, sheep should be dewormed as early as 2-3 months of age
