A six-year study was conducted to develop high yielding soybean variety, PSB SY8. In the first phase of the study, ten soybean varieties were used as parental sources - AGS 129, AGS 7, AGS 62, AGS 66, G2105, G5229, G38, GG86, S12, and SG5. The local seed board varieties used were UPL SY2, TK5, Clark 63 and BPI SY4. For the Phase 2, seven cross-combinations were developed. The crosses made between UPL SY2 and AGS 129 produced the most number of seeds. Seeds were planted in pots to produce F1 plants for two seasons. Twenty-three promising lines were selected and evaluated for two seasons in Preliminary yield trial (PYT). These varieties were evaluated together with the check variety. Among the varieties evaluated, the five top yielders were PSB SY8 (formerly LGSY 12-12-2.73 t/ha), LGSY 05-8 (2.32 t/ha), LGSY 12-10 (2.24 t/ha), LGSY 21-5 (2.08 t/ha), and LGSY 18-12 (2.03 t/ha). In the 1993 wet season, two promising lines, including LGSY 12-12, were entered in the National Cooperative Testing (NCT) on Field Legumes. After testing for four seasons, entries that surpassed the yield and other characteristics of PSBSY 3, the national check were recommended to the National Seed Industry Council. NCT results showed that LGSY 12-12 obtained a mean yield of 2,687 kg/ha during the wet season and 1,978 kg/ha during the dry season. It gave a yield advantage of 7.78 percent and 13.28 percent higher than the check variety during the wet and dry seasons, respectively. Laboratory analysis showed that the seed contained 33.38 percent protein, 19.92 percent fat, 31.96 percent carbohydrates, and 4.48 percent ash. Furthermore, LGSY 12-12 was found resistant to bacterial pustule and soybean rust. In 1997, NSIC released LGSY 12-12 as commercial variety known as PSB SY8 after it was recommended for breeder seed increase
