Control of citrus tristeza virus (CTV) disease in the highlands

The possibility of controlling CTV [citrus tristeza virus] on susceptible citrus varieties grown in the highlands was studied using cross-protection by the mild CTV isolates. Results showed that one isolate was found to have induced stem pitting on Citrumelo rootstock. CTV infection on the other mandarin cultivars, lemons and other rootstock did not show typical symptoms in the field. Biological characterization showed a wide range of CTV isolates variability CTV ranging from mild to very severe reactions. Mild isolates induced only vein clearing reactions on Mexican Lime, while severe isolates induced symptoms of vein clearing, leaf cupping, stem pitting, and stunting on both Mexican lime and Madam Vinous. Two isolates showed severe yellowing of seedling of sour orange and vein corking of Mexican lime. On th other hand, one isolate induced stunting and stem pitting on Madam Vinous but failed to induce symptoms on Mexican lime. The potential for cross-protection using the mild strains of CTV was evaluated. Of the 13 local isolates evaluated, three isolates namely: SAG-3, Cam-1, and BL-1 showed potential while two isolates, SAG-3 and Cam-1 showed potential against Gay-SP. Among the introduced isolates, LMS6, GFMS 12, GFMS35, M15-A and M16-A, showed potential against SWO-SP while isolates M15-A, M16-A and M23-A showed potential against Gay-SP
