Development of new and commercially-usable CMS lines for tropical rice hybrids

IRRI [International Rice Research Inst., Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines] scientists and some collaborating countries were encouraged to intensify research on hybrid rice with the successful development and cultivation of hybrid rice in China in 1976. The Chinese hybrids and parental lines did not adapt well to tropical rice-growing conditions so it was necessary for the interested countries to develop their own parental lines and hybrids. IRRI came up with 2 commercially-usable CMS [cytoplasmic-genetic male sterile] lines namely, IR58025 A and IR62829 A, which when crossed to the numerous restorer lines found among elite indica rice cultivars, produced hundreds of experimental rice hybrids. Some of these yielded about 1 ton/ha more than inbred checks in national trials under irrigated conditions. Soon countries such as India, Vietnam, and the Philippines released some promising hybrids for commercial cultivation by farmers. At present, new and better CMS lines have been developed and are available in the genetic background of irrigated, rainfed, and aromatic rice cultivars
