Extruded mixture of sweet potato and copra meal as partial direct replacement of corn in swine diet

A total of 18 growing pigs (Landrace x Yorkshire cross) were fed started diet from weaning (12 kg) to 20 kg, and grower diet from 20-40 kg. Thereafter, the pigs were housed in individual pens and distributed at random to three treatments, following a completely randomized design. The treatments were: Tr1-grower and finisher diets without extruded mixture of sweetpotato and copra meal (ESPCM) (control); Tr2-grower and finisher diets with 20 percent of corn replaced with ESPCM; and Tr3-grower and finisher diets with 30 percent of corn replaced with ESPCM. The pigs were fed with grower diets from 40 to 60 kg, and finisher diets from 60-80 kg, for 50 days. Results indicate that ESPCM can replace up to 30 percent of corn in grower diets without significant depression in feed intake, live weight gain and feed efficiency. Feed efficiency was slightly better on pigs receiving the highest amount of ESPCM. The dressing percentage was not affected by feeding of ESPCM to swine. The backfat thickness and loin eye area did not differ among the treatments considered. In terms of general acceptability, the meat were all rated favorable
