Effects of two diets on the ovary development of native [Philippines] catfish, C. [Clarias] macrocephalus

Th effects of two diets (Diet 1 - commercial diet with 20% CP [crude protein] and Diet 2 - formulated diet of 90% trash fish + 10 rice bran) on the ovarian development of Clarias macrocephalus were determined. The fish fed with formulated diet gave a higher number of matured oocytes than that of the fish fed with commercial diet. Ovary development was influenced by the level of protein in the diet available to the female fish. The low percentage of matured females among the fish fed Diet 1 suggests that protein level (20% CP) might not be sufficient for maintenance and egg formation compared to Diet 2. However, parameters to measure the diet may not be sufficient. Additional parameters should be considered in future study
