Physio-genetic and breeding aspects of salinity tolerance in bread wheat: A review

Salinity tolerance in crops plants depending on the uptake of anions (Na+ and K+) and cations (Cl-). Na+ contents was found to be increasing and K+ contents found to be decreasing in older leaves than younger leaves. Physiological traits found to be more affected by micro and macro environmental changes (temperature, light, humidity, growing system and irrigation etc.) than agronomic traits. Salinity tolerance is genetically controlled and transmittable among genotypes. Whole plant performance might be more useful selection criteria for salinity tolerance than using a single trait i.e. high K+/Na+ ratio, low N+ or high yield etc.
