Wildlife of the Subic Bay Forest Reserve [Philippines]: a preliminary report

A three year study on the biodiversity (fauna) of the Subic Bay Forest Reserve (SBFR), Olongapo City, Zambales [Philippines] began in August 1996. This report covers the survey of the wildlife in the SBFR conducted from October 1996 to February 1997. Using a combination of standard collection methodologies, a total of 169 species was recorded. These include nine species of amphibians, 13 species of reptiles, 123 species of birds and 24 species of mammals. Endemism was high in all taxa, ranging between 33 percent and 50 percent. Furthermore, several species were new records for the Zambales-Bataan biogeographic zone including amphibians namely, Rana woodworthi and R. erythrea, reptiles such as Sphenomorphus jagori and Hurria rhynchops and mammals such as Phloemys pallidus, Bullimus luzonicus, Chrotomys mindorensis, Apomys sacobianus and A. datae. The species designation for mammals are tentative and are still currently being worked out. Birds recorded in this study represent 83 percent of those reported by Gilliard in 1950 in the forests of Bataan. This study also recorded several species of birds not reported in a 1992 survey by Kennedy et al. in various elevations of Mt. high Peak north of the current study site. Thus, the diversity of wildlife found in the SBFR is still relatively high considering the extent of forest degradation that had occurred and continued to occur in the area. However, stronger conservation measures need to be put in place and implemented immediately to ensure that the existing biodiversity will be protected
