Marine macrobenthic flora and fauna of Taklong Island National Marine Reserve [Guimaras, Philippines]

This is an assessment of the status of biodiversity in the three coastal communities (coral reefs, seagrass beds and mangrove swamps) within the Taklong Island National Marine Reserve. The study showed that there is an estimated 112 ha of reefs, 20 ha of seagrass beds and approximately 40 ha of mangrove swamps surrounding the two big islands of Tandog and Taklong included in the protected area. Results revealed that there are far greater number of species and genera of hard corals than had been earlier reported in the fringing reef surrounding the seaward, facing the sides of Taklong and Tandog Islands, and vicinity islets. There are at least 92 hard coral species in 44 genera. This represents 25% of the total number of hard coral species collected and identified from many parts of the Philippines and about 16.5% of the total species recorded in Australia and Indo-Pacific region. Reef conditions in surveyed reef sites ranged from "poor" (25%) to "good" living coral cover
