Sulphur in soils and plants of Poland

The latest research showed that Poland's soils have been enriched in sulphur over the last 20 years. It came about because of the notorious contamination of atmosphere with SO2 from anthropogenic sources and deposition of sulphur compounds in soils. The rise in sulphur contents for some soils varied from 10.8 (rendzinas) to 18.0 (alluvial soils) mg total S/100 g. For organic soils it was 38 mg total S/100 g soil. Those changes were also corroborated by the rise in S content of crop plants and of dandelion, the later being an accepted plant indicator of chemical contamination. However, it takes place in regions with the highest sulphur contamination of air and soil or around the local sources of sulphur emission
