Maize plants cultivated under glass-house conditions were exposed to salt stress by application of NaCl in dose 10, 15, 20 and 25 g/l. Five days after application, the plants on a content of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Na, beta-1,3-glucanase and dry matter were analysed. It has been shown that while Na increased in maize in dependence on doses of NaCl, the content of other elements varied. In all treated plants the glucanase was higher than in the control. Increase in dry matter content was recorded only in the plants on the lowest NaCl dose whereas in the others, treated with higher NaCl ones, its content was lower than the control. Responses of maize to salt stress showed that beta-1,3-glucanase is sensitive to Na concentration. Enzyme is localized in cell wall and in connection with the changes of dry matter content its effect on growth process via cell wall remodelling is considered
