Technological application in okra production for export of the growers in Central region

Objectives of this research were to study the social factors, knowledge, technology application, problems, and suggestions of farmers who grew okra for export. The population were 217 okra growers in the provinces of Ratchaburi, Saraburi, Nakhon Pathom, Suphan Buri and Bangkok Metropolis. Data were gathered by interviewing. Statistics used for data analysis were mean, percentage and chi-square. The results revealed that the majority of okra growers were male. The average age was 38.6 years. Most finished elementary level. The farm size was mostly 1-4 rai. After testing their knowledge on okra production, the average score was 7.9 (from 14 scores). However, there were more farmers with more knowledge. Most gained knowledge from extension agents and their neighbours. They applied production technology with the average score of 9.9 from 14 scores recommended by Department of Agricultural Extension. Problems faced by okra farmers were mainly plant protection and labour. Consequently, they suggested that more appropriate plant protection techniques, training programmes on pest control, and low-cost fertilizer support should be handled. Also, it was found that there were no correlation between sex, age, level of education, knowledge and technology application at the 0.05 level of significance. It is recommended that the cause of infection should be studied, farmers should be given strong support in term of inputs and pest control technology knowledge. Mechanization of okra production should also be promoted.
