Photosynthesis of feral sugarcane (Saccharum spontaneum) collected in the Southwest Islands in Japan

Fifteen traits related to photosynthesis were investigated on 33 lines of Saccharum spontaneum collected in the Southwest Islands in Japan. Significant differences (P0.01) were found among the lines for each of the fifteen traits. Photosynthetic carbon exchange rate (PCER) under high light conditions (2000 micro E/mi/s) showed a wide variation ranging from 20.46 to 81.56 mg CO2/square dm/h. Principal component analysis (PCR) classified the 33 lines of S. spontaneum on their native Island.
