Growth and yield of BR11 rice under different levels of sulphur, zinc and boron fertility at two locations of Bangladesh

Field experiments were carried out at two locations viz. Domar seed multiplication farm and in a farmers' field at Melandha of Bangladesh during 1991-92 in order to examine the response of BR11 rice with the application of S, Zn and B. The effects of S, Zn and B on rice were determined in terms of number of panicles/square m, grains/panicle, grain and straw yields. There were eight treatment combinations viz. control, S, Zn, B, S+Zn, S+B, Zn+B, and S+Zn+B. The rates of S, Zn and B were 20, 5 and 3 kg/ha respectively. The experiments were carried out in randomized block design with four replications. Grain yield of rice responded significantly to the applied nutrients at both locations. In Domar Farm, the effect of S and Zn was dominant while B application had no effect on growth parameters and grain yield of rice. The highest grain yield of rice of 4.61 t/ha was obtained in S+Zn treatment which was 54 percent increase over the control while application of S and Zn brought about 34 percent and 15 percent yield increase, respectively. In farmers' field at Melandha, application of any two nutrients together increased grain yield but such an increase was statistically significant only when S and Zn were in comparison to single application of the elements. The highest grain yield was obtained with S+Zn+B application showing a 42 percent increase over the control while single application of S, Zn and B alone brought and yield increase, respectively.
