Response of laying hens raised in high ambient temperature to energy and protein levels

Experiment was conducted in laying hens with 3 levels of metabolizable energy (2700 2800 and 2900 kcal/kg) and 2 levels of crude protein (17 and 19 percent) in corn-soy basal diets from 33 to 52 weeks of age in order to determine the optimal levels of ME and CP for laying hens rearing under high ambient temperature. No significant differences in daily feed intake, total weight gain, and mortality were observed among the dietary treatments. However, an increased level of ME in the diet from 2700 to 2800 kcal/kg improved (P0.05) egg production, egg mass, feed per dozen egg, specific gravity value of the eggs and feed cost per dozen egg. Egg weight and feed cost per dozen egg were also observed increasingly (P0.05) with the higher level of CP (19 percent). Under the high ambient temperature (30 deg C), feeding the laying hens with 2800 kcal ME/kg and 19 percent CP diet was proved to be optimized for maintaining body condition as well as egg production.
