Study on the mangrove vegetation was conducted in July 1995 at the Pak Phanang Bay of Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, Southern Thaiand. Five plots, each measuring 10*10 m, were established along the transect line with 200 m apart for each plot. The transect line, however was set perpendicular to the coastline so that it represented the vegetation condition from the coast or the mudflat to the terrestrial area. After a forest plot was selected, the species composition was recorded, the detailed architechtural profile diagram and the vegetation map were also drawn. Seedlings and sapplings of Avicennia Officinalis and Sonneratia caseolaris occupied most of the deep mudflat of seaward zone. Next to this zone, four species namely A. officinalis, Rhizophora apiculata, Bruguiera sexan and Bruguiera cylindrica having diameter at breast height (dbh) greater than 4.5 cm were largely observed. In addition, an average density of 2350 trees per hactare with almost equal numbers of A. officinalis and R. apiculata were found to be dominant. Due to the re-forestation project by clearing partly of the natural vegetation in this area and replanted with R. apiculata, the number of R. apiculata having height between 1.30-6.30 m and DBH. between 4.5-13 cm was found to be greater than that of A. officinalis. As large number of seedlings and sapplings were observed, this forest could be at it's natural stages of development. It is also believed that if the successional process continue naturally, the dominant species for this area will be A. officinalis.
