Objective of this research was to improve non-detasseled baby corn by using C cytoplasmic male sterility. During 1988-91, four and one selected male-sterile lines from IITA (Nigeria) and Guatemala, respectively, were used as female in crossing with Suwan2(S)C7. Suwan2(S)C7 was backcrossed to Nigeria and Guatemala backgrounds five and two times, respectively. During 1992-94, a maintainer and female parent were developed for producing a male-sterile baby corn variety, Kasetsart 1. From results of evaluation at 12 experiment stations in the 1993 rainy season, on average, Kasetsart 1 gave unhusked (925 kg/rai), husked (175 kg/rai), and standard (121 kg/rai) ear weights, number of standard ears (64 percent), the ratio of unhusked to husked ear weight (5.29), and ears/plant (2.24) higher than those of Suwan 2, and not different from Chiang Mai 90. Furthermore, Kasetsart 1 had harvest date (44 days) and ear aspect and color the same as Suwan 2. However, it had higher plant and ear height 187 and 106 cm and fresh plant weight (5,032 kg/rai) than those of Suwan 2. Also, it was comparable to Suwan 2 for resistance to root lodging, downy mildew and other leaf diseases. Consequently, Kasetsart 1, a non-detasseled variety, will reduce labor cost of baby corn production and eliminate time-consuming detasseling.
