Yield loss of mungbean caused by insect pests of different growth stages and their control

Field trials were carried out for two seasons on the effect of time of insecticide applications on insect pests, damage and yield of mungbean. During dry season, at seedling and vegetative stage of crop growth were found to be infested by Scirtothrips dorsalis, Spodoptera litura, Hedylepta indicata, and H. diemenalis, the flowering and podding stages by Megalurothrips usitatus, S. dorsalis and Nezara viridula. There were significantly increases in number of harvestable pods per plant, grain yield per plant and per rai with an increased in number of insecticide applications. Yield loss was 36.01 percent for untreated plot. In rainy season crop, few insect species were found and only pod borers were the most potential pests at podding stages. However, no significant yield loss were found in any stages. The highest benefit/cost ratio (10.02) was obtained with three insecticide applications (at 30, 37 and 44 day after emergence) of dry season crop.
