Study on the efficacy of alcohol neem extract (Azadirachta indica var. siamensis Valeton) and its suitable formulation in the control of the red spider mite (Tetranychus hydrangeae Pritchard and Baker)

Thai neem tree; Azadirachta indica var. siamensis Valeton, a native plant of Thailand, had effectiveness to control the red spider mite; Tetranychus hydrangeae Pritchard and Baker. Alcohol neem extract and N1m had moderate toxicity to this mite. The effectiveness of them had not only on poison contact, but also repellency and reduction of fecundity of the mite. The efficacy of alcohol neem extract was significantly higher than N1m, but lesser in repellency property. The efficacy of alcohol neem extract could be improved by mixing with some chemicals, such as white oil, Foil and PBO. An addition of white oil and PBO rendered the latter much more effective to 51.74 and 50.06 percent, respectively. A field trial was undertaken to determine the effectiveness of different neem extracts and propagite to control the red spider mite. The alcohol neem extract in various formulations were effective in the control of this mite in low population and showed no significant difference from propagite, while it had significant difference from control. Morever, neem extracts caused less toxic to predators, such as Scirtothrips spp. and Phytoseiulus spp. than propagite.
