Preliminary study on the edible forage of sambar deer

Nine Sambar deer (Cervus unicolor) were employed in this experiment and penned in 2 paddocks of 10x10 and 20x30 square m at Lopburi Research Station, Kasetsart University, Kook Jareon district, Lopburi province. Forage of 29 species were edible for Sambar deer: 1. Brachiaria mutica 2. Zea mays 3. Acacia sp. 4. Oryza sativa 5. Brassica chinensis 6. Solanum sp. 7. Manihot esculenta 8. Imperata cylindrica 9. Cyperus sp. 10. Ipomea sp. 11. Amaranthus spinosus 12. Sorghum vulgare 13. Saccharum officinarum 14. Pterocarpus macrocarpus 15. Broussonetia papyrifera 16. Shorea siamensis 17. Shorea obtusa 18. Garuga pinnata 19. Millingtonia hortinsis 20. Eupatorium odoratum 21. Leucaena leucocephala 22. Pithecellobium dulce 23. Azadirachta indica 24. Cassia siamea 25. Peltophorum pterocarpum 26. Samanea saman 27. Setaria italica 28. Ficus sp. 29. Ficus vasculosa. Average values of dry matter intake on a hemp, corn plants and cassava chips were 2.57, 2.80 and 1.32 kg/head/day, respectively. The hemp contained; dry matter 91.93, protein 17.28, NDF 33.62, ADF 26.56, Ca 0.92 and P 1.10 percent DM.
