Effect of types and weights of seed rhizome on growth and yield of turmeric (Curcuma longa L.)

Investigation on growth and yield of turmeric as affected by various types and weights of seed rhizome at the spacing of 75*30 square cm was conducted at Pakchong Research Station, Nakorn Ratchasima, during April 25, 1994 to January 20, 1995. The shortest peroid of 27.67 and 49.09 days for 10 percent and 90 percent germination were obtained from using half-divided mother rhizome weighted 15-50 gms/piece, which is not statistically difference from using primary rhizome weighted 2-3 gms/piece. Using whole mother rhizome weighted 15-30 gms resulted in the highest yield per clump of : total rhizomes (652.49 gms), mother rhizomes (106.2 gms), primary rhizomes (212.46 gms, secondary rhizomes (257.81 gms) and total weight of primary and secondary rhizomes (470.27 gms). Yield of turmeric rhizomes tends to decrease in direct proporting with the decreased with the decreased weight of seed rhizomes. The maximum plant height (141.17 cm) and maximum diameter (4.33 cm) of mother rhizome were obtained from planting with whole mother rhizomes weighted 15.30 gms/piece at 156 days after planting, and decreased in direct proportion with the decreased weight of seed rhizomes. Types and weights of seed rhizomes had no effect on number of plants per clump and number and size of tuberous roots. Growth rate of stem both in height and number of plants per clump quickly increased after germination and reached its peak at 5 months after planting. Growth rate decreased afterwards.
