Investigations were carried out in a pot experiment, on soil-sand mixture of 3:1 volume proportion, with winter wheat cultivars of increased (Tamish, El Gaucho) and lessened grain protein content (Srbijanka, Skopljanka). In stages of flowering and full maturity there were analyzed some parameters of accumulation and distribution of dry matter and nitrogen in plant. Cultivars with increased protein content distinguished with increased coefficient of tillering and increased amount of plant nitrogen per unit of grain yield, that is, with lower efficiency of utilization of nitrogen. Increase of protein content in cultivar El Gaucho was obtained on account of grain yield loss, while in cultivar Tamish on account of increased accumulation of nitrogen in plant. The cultivar El Gaucho distinguished by lessened, and Tamish by increased values of nitrogen harvest index. According to these results, increase of nitrogen accumulation in plant is a substantial condition for overcoming of negative correlation between yield and protein content in grain.
