There was studied the effect of stand density on leaf area development in sunflower hybrids. The trial was carried out on a chernozem soil in a six-field crop rotation according to the two-factorial split-plot design. The main plot consisted of three registered or experimental hybrids (NS-Dukat, NS-H-111, and NS-H-103), while the subplots included six different stand densities: 30,000, 40,000, 50,000, 60,000, 70,000, and 80,000 plants per hectare. With increasing stand density, leaf area per plant decreased, while the leaf area index increased. Leaf area reached its maximum in flowering stage. The period of the most intensive growth was from 6 paires of leaves stage till budding.
