Care behaviour of maternal mouthbreeding fishes of the genus Tropheus (Cichlidae) was studied. Deprivated females (incubated in an artificial hatchery) spawn less frequently and have smaller number of offspring than those in normal contact with its own mother in the embryonal and early juvenile period. Absolute fecundity is not touched but the number of swimming offspring in deprivated females is 0-4 (ave. 0.6) only, contrary to normal females (0-16, ave. 5.6). General importance of parental care for descendants' mental development is assumed in all vertebrates with parental care.
