Effect of heavy metals on mycorrhizal symbiosis and metal uptake of mono- and dicotyledonous plants

On the basis of four findings the AM symbiosis may increase the stress tolerance of the host plants towards trace metals, which occur in toxic concentrations in the soil. In this protective mechanism, however the adaptation of the fungus to the heavy metal stress is an important parameter. After 5 and 6 years of the metal application a selection of the metal-adapted AM fungi was found in this study, which could reduce the metal-toxicity. In case of the various host-plants, however, different protective mechanisms might be present. A much higher biomass production was found with the dicotyledonous clover, while there was no influence of the AMF symbiosis on the monocotyledonous ryegrass. Further investigations must be necessary, however to study the general behaviour of the grass-type crops and the leguminous plants at the metal-contamination. Important role of the symbioses, the enhanced stress-tolerance of the host-plants call our attention to the possible use of the AM fungi in the phytoremediation projects.
