Two rapid methods for Listeria monocytogenes determination may be used instead of the classical and very long technique of cultivation on culture medium. The first method (RAPID L.MONO) uses a chromogenic substrate and is specific for the pathogenic species L. monocytogenes. No reaction is obtained with non-pathogenic species of the genus Listeria. The second method, called Duplex PCR, enables Listeria detection in 4 hours. 990 food samples were analyzed by the Center of Food Chains Hygiene in the Czech Republic from 1998 to 1999. Listeria innocua was isolated in 176 cases, L. monocytogenes in 63 cases, L. welshimeri in 9 cases and L. seeligeri in 6 cases. L. ivanovii was found in 1 case.
